Ghaziabad: Three days after a 17-year-old girl jumped to death from the third floor inside Shahdara’s Cross River mall, the Ghaziabad police arrested a 22-year-old engineering graduate from Jaipur for abetment of suicide.
The girl, Priya Singh, was a first-year BBA student at a private institute in Sector 62, Noida. She was staying with her parents and two younger brothers in a quarter allotted to her father, a sub-inspector in Provincial Armed Constabulary, on the campus of 41 PAC Battalion in Vaishali, Ghaziabad.
According to police, the accused, identified as Rinku Meena, had been making threatening calls to Priya and her family members over phone.
Rinku, meanwhile, told police that he had come in contact with Priya on Facebook nearly two years ago. Rinku’s family lives in Dalanpur in Karauli district of Rajasthan.
“An unidentified person had been harassing my daughter for the past two years. My daughter was avoiding his overtures. But the man seemed to be obsessive and also threatened me over phone several times. He used to call us from different numbers apart from sending text messages to my daughter. A few days ago, he shared a photograph, showing him with my daughter, with one of our acquaintances in our neighbourhood. Priya was depressed over this and left home without telling us anything on September 22,” her father, KP Singh (43), told TOI.
Singh said, the girl had left home dressed in an olive-coloured top having white polka dots and dark-coloured slack pants. A missing complaint was lodged by Singh at Indirapuram police station on September 22. The police registered an FIR under IPC Section 363 (kidnapping) and began investigations. In his complaint, Singh had cast suspicion on the unidentified caller.
On September 23 morning, Priya’s family members were informed about her death. She had left behind a suicide note for her parents, which was recovered from her body. “I am leaving because I won’t ever be able to look at you both in the eyes. This morning Mummy told me certain things that pained me immensely. If I wasn’t helpless, I wouldn’t have taken this extreme step,” she wrote in the note.

After Priya’s death, the police added Section 306 (abetment of suicide) to the FIR at Indirapuram police station. Police said Rinku was nabbed after his mobile phone was placed under surveillance. The report of the girl’s post-mortem, which was conducted in Delhi, is awaited by Ghaziabad police.
Police said, CCTV footage has been recovered from the mall that shows the girl plunging down from the third floor. Probe is underway to ascertain the identity of two boys, who were seen talking to the girl in the footage before she jumped from the third floor.
“The accused was friends with the girl for the past two years on Facebook. In the past, the girl’s younger brother had scolded her after discovering her friendship with the accused. Her father had also sternly asked the accused to keep away from his daughter. They had been threatening the boy with an FIR against him if he did not mend his ways. The girl was obviously distraught with the constant bickering over the issue. The accused had not met the girl on the day she committed suicide. The photos that the accused shared over WhatsApp are not obscene or vulgar in nature,” said in-charge SP (city) of Ghaziabad, Rajesh Kumar.
