Tragic! Odisha daughters forced to dismantle roof for wood for mother's funeral pyre

Kalahandi, Sep 26: Odisha has been in news since a tribal man carried the body of his wife for over 10 kilometres due to lack of transportation facilities in the village. In another horrific incident that took place in Odisha on Friday night, four daughters had to dismantle the roof of their house for their mother’s funeral pyre.

The incident took place in Dokripada village of Kalahandi district in Odisha where a 75-year-old woman, Kanak Satpathy, died after being ill for a long time. The family being poor, had no money to perform Kanak’s last rituals. They also asked help from their neighbours but their plea fell on deaf ears. Nobody turned up to help the helpless girls.  As no one offered a helping hand, the four brave girls decided to carry their mother’s body on their head to cremation ground.

As reported, out of the four daughters, two are widows and two have been deserted by their husbands.  As they did not have any source of living, they begged for food in order to survive. Over the past few months, Odisha has been highlighted for the plight of the poor and the pitiable conditions of the hospital in providing basic amenities.
