Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to undergo MRI after knee injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) talks to line judge Sarah Thomas (53) during a time out in a game against the San Francisco 49ers at CenturyLink Field.

SEATTLE — Russell Wilson will undergo an MRI on his left knee after being forced to leave the game during the third quarter of the Seattle Seahawks’ 37-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Wilson’s knee buckled awkwardly as he was sacked by 49ers linebacker Eli Harold, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after the game he had "sprained his knee a little bit."

The Seahawks quarterback insisted he would be fine for next week’s road game with the New York Jets and said in his media conference that he expected to be “good to go”. However, both Carroll and receiver Doug Baldwin urged Wilson not to increase the possibility of further injury by taking unnecessary risks.

“It is (not) as severe as it looked,” said Wilson, who was replaced by backup Trevone Boykin following a heavy hit, and with the home team enjoying a healthy lead. “I am fortunate. I will do some tests and check all that stuff out but I am walking fine and moving well.”

Wilson entered the game already nursing a right ankle sprain, for which he received extensive treatment leading up to game day.

After sustaining the injury, Wilson re-entered the game briefly, before being kept out to prevent aggravating things further, with staff encasing his left knee in a brace on the sidelines.

“Oh yeah,” Carroll said, when asked if Wilson was urging to be allowed back in. “I told him he better put that helmet down, he’s not getting it back. So we buckled it up. He wanted to get back in, even at the end. It was easy to justify, we had the game in hand.”

Wilson completed 15 of 23 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown and generally appeared far more mobile than in the previous week’s 9-3 defeat to the Rams in Los Angeles. His presence will be needed if Seattle is to make a strong run at the postseason, and Baldwin was outspoken in encouraging him to rest.

“My heart dropped,” Baldwin said, in reference to the moment of Wilson’s injury. “I told (Carroll) to pull him out. In that moment I was really adamant about getting him out of the game. “
