Two first half-goals from full-forward Philip Brady proved pivotal as Mullahoran St Joseph’s regained the Cavan SHC title at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Cootehill Celtic enjoyed the better start and led by 1-1 to no-score after 10 minutes after Aiden Fitzpatrick’s goal. Mullahoran’s experience began to tell though and when man-of-the-match Brady drilled the ball to the net in the 13th minute, it was game on.

Derrick Dalton put the 2013 champions in front (1-2 to 1-1) for the first time after 17 minutes and it was a lead they would never subsequently relinquish. Cootehill stayed in touch even though Brady’s second major (29) left them trailing by 1-3 to 2-4 at the half-way mark.

Mullahoran led by four points at the three-quarter hour mark but Cootehill hung in there and a second goal (47) by Fitzpatrick left just a point between the sides.

The Celts pushed forward to regain parity. In a last desperate attack, Caoimhín Carney was fouled but his Cootehill colleague Fiachra Hughes pulled the subsequent free narrowly wide with the last puck of the game.
