A concrete sports law is necessary to solve the disputes regarding sports and a constitutional body should resolve the cases as the National Sports Development Bill which has been introduced in 2011 still to see the light of the day, felt Judge of High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy here on Sunday.
Delivering a speech on growing importance of sports laws as part of the ninth foundation day celebrations of the Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Mr. Justice Nagarjuna Reddy was frank as he revealed many facts that might not be known to many people.
Advise to law students
He advised the law students to take up sports law which provides a great scope professionally but prior to that they should be well versed with the Contract Law, Evidence Law, Civil Procedure Code and other laws. It was also necessary to understand the players, organisers and the sponsors.
All sports in India are conducted by federations of a particular sport but they are not statutory bodies and only registered societies and do not come under the government control leading to many disputes sparked by politicians and big businessmen who run the federation. The sports associations’ governing rules and code of conducts are not a piece of legislation but an amalgamation of the contract laws, criminal laws, law of evidence, which have been governing the sports law, explaining how disputes have nothing to do with sports law.

Later, DSNLU conducted a quiz competition on sports law in which teams from five National Law Universities participated. NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, was winner and Bengaluru Institute of Law was runner-up. Vice-Chancellor in-charge of DSNLU V. Keshava Rao gave away the prizes.
