The water level in Palair balancing reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal reached 21.5 feet, against the maximum level of 23 feet, on Sunday evening following steady inflows from the upstream areas of the reservoir spread in the neighbouring Nalgonda district.
The water level in the reservoir, the prime source of irrigation and drinking water in Khammam division, was in a precarious position until a few weeks ago, leaving the ayacutdars of the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) left canal system in the district in distress. With the sudden surge in the water levels the under construction intake well is facing threat of inundation, sources said. On Sunday evening the officials have released water from the balancing reservoir to Wyra reservoir, another major source of irrigation and drinking water in Khammam division. Elsewhere in the district, the main rivers including Kinnerasani and Taliperu besides rivulets, including Munneru, Akeru and Peddacheruvu, among others, are brimming.
