The Kudumbasree Mission has drawn up a plan to train 2,200 women self-help group members in various jobs in the construction sector. The training programme, to be implemented across the State, will begin soon.

The scheme aims at increasing the presence of women in the construction sector, and provided them expert training so as to fetch them a better pay.

In the first phase, as many as 30 women in each district will be given training for a month. Besides construction, the women will also be trained in electrical wiring, and plumbing.

After an evaluation of the first phase, the women will be given specialised training depending on their interests. Next, construction groups will be formed in each district. Opportunities will be made available to the women to become part of various projects being implemented in the State.

Women going for jobs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme have been included in the project.

The scheme was first launched in Ernakulam in 2014 on an experimental basis.

The units, which include engineer, supervisor, and mason, functioned on the model of a small enterprise. The units then got permission to build 87 houses under the aegis of the Scheduled Tribes Department inw Edakkattuvayal panchayat in the district.

Thirty of these houses are ready. Three houses were also built in Mukkannoor panchayat by bringing them under the Ashraya project.

The success in these endeavours has prompted Kudumbasree to expand the project by training more women.
