Eight Dalit victims of caste-based discrimination or atrocity from Una region of Saurashtra on Sunday began indefinite hunger strike at Satyagraha Chhavni in Gandhinagar, seeking redressal of their various demands from the Gujarat government.

The victims are from various villages and towns of Saurashtra like Akolali, Ningala, Vadli, Samter, Rajula and Amreli. And they are victims of atrocities of different nature like murder, social boycott, ‘hijrat’ or forced migration, alleged false prosecution, and alleged willful negligence by police in investigation of some of the cases.

Ahmedabad-based human rights activist, Raju Solanki, said, “Una flogging issue is definitely painful. But, here in this region around Una, there are number of cases of atrocities against Dalits which are much graver and yet the victims are still searching for justice and the state administration is turning a deaf ear to them.”

“So, these victims have, from today, sat on indefinite hunger strike here in Gandhinagar seeking redressal of their demands from the state government. And I am supporting them,” Solanki said.
