Bundesliga: Hamburg hire Gisdol to replace Labbadia

September 25, 2016

Hamburg have wasted no time in appointing Markus Gisdol as successor to sacked head coach Bruno Labbadia. The former Hoffenheim boss was appointed less than 24 hours after Labbadia got the chop.

Gisdol was in charge at Hoffenheim for about 18 months between 2013 and 2015 before he was replaced by Huub Stevens after a poor start to the 2015/16 campaign.

The 47-year-old emerged as the frontrunner for the Hamburg gig on Sunday afternoon following Labbadia's dismissal and Hamburg confirmed he would be the new man in charge with a tweet on Sunday evening. Gisdol's appointment will be formally announced at a press conference on Monday.

The German enjoyed great success in the 2013/14 season with Hoffenheim, a campaign in which his attacking style saw the club become the Bundesliga's entertainers, scoring 70 goals and conceding 72 in a single season - the highest combined total of scored and conceded goals by any team in Bundesliga history.

He was also renowned for spotting young talent and was a leading figure in the development of several key players for the club under his tenure. Among those youngsters were Kevin Volland and Roberto Firmino who have both since left the club, as well as Hoffenheim's current captain and German international Sebastian Rudy.

Gisdol has signed a contract until June 30, 2017 and he will take charge in time for Hamburg's trip to Hertha Berlin next Saturday.

The club confirmed in an official statement that it was Gisdol's own wish to sign his contract only until until the end of this season.
