Roorkee excise inspector awarded 7-yr jail

NEW DELHI: In a rare speedy trial, a special CBI court in Dehradun has convicted a Central Excise inspector and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment for taking a bribe of Rs 3,500 within a year of trial.

In a rare speedy trial, a special CBI court in Dehradun has convicted a Central Excise inspector and sentenced him to seven years of imprisonment for taking a bribe of Rs 3,500 within a year of trial.

CBI sources said Vikash Jatav, then Inspector, Central Excise, Roorkee, had been sentenced to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment (maximum punishment in a corruption case) and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said here that the court had ordered filing of separate cases against four witnesses who allegedly lied under oath. “A case was registered on a complaint on May 6, 2015, under section 7 of the Prohibition of Corruption Act, 1988, against Vikas Jatav, Inspector, Central Excise, Roorkee, on the charge that he demanded a bribe for registering the complainant’s firm. The CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed while a bribe of Rs 3,500 from the complainant,” Gaur said.

He added the agency also recovered a paper, handwritten by Jatav, in which he had sought Rs 3,500 in bribe.

“After investigation, a chargesheet was filed against the accused on July 4, 2015, in the court of Special Judge, CBI, Dehradun. Charges were framed on September 14, 2015. Ten prosecution witnesses were examined,” he said.

Gaur added the court also ordered opening separate cases under section 344 of CrPC against witnesses KK Anand, Guddu, Rakesh Dhiman and Anubhav Dhiman for giving false evidence before the court.— PTI
