PATNA: As part of its cleanup drive after the Inter toppers’ scam surfaced in May-June this year, the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) on Sunday suspended the affiliation of 56 more +2 schools and colleges for non-compliance of prescribed norms. Now, the number of schools and colleges whose affiliation has been suspended is 144. Earlier, the BSEB already withheld the affiliation of 88 such institutions.
The board has also cancelled the affiliation of nine colleges.
The BSEB initiated a probe in July against 212 colleges, which had been granted affiliation during the tenure of tainted former board chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad Singh since June 2014. It has received probe reports related to 177 schools and colleges till Sunday. Most schools, whose affiliation was suspended on Sunday are from Gaya, Madhepura, West Champaran and Saran districts.
“While these colleges had been granted affiliation by the board, no letter had been issued to them. Large-scale irregularities were also detected during the probe,” said a press statement issued by the BSEB.
Citing some examples of the gross irregularities unearthed by the BSEB probe team, sources said some schools such as Jaiprakash Yadav Uchchtar Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Gaya and Scholar Uchch Madhyamik +2 Vidyalaya in Saran were being run only on paper. Others like Mahadev Memorial Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya and Puniya Ratan Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Gaya, Mehin Sevi-Shiv Shahi Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya and Kamleshwari Deepnarayan Jainarayan Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Madhepura were being run in residential buildings with little infrastructure.
BSEB sources said there were also schools such as Harilal Savitri Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Madhepura, where faculty members were not even aware about the subjects they were supposed to teach and Baba Bhootnath Inter Mahavidyalaya in West Champaran where a degree college was also functional on the same campus.
The board on Sunday also decided to lodge an FIR against Udayanacharya Vidyakar Kavi Inter Mahavidyalaya at Alamnagar in Madhepura district for admitting students without getting affiliation. On September 6, the BSEB had decided to lodge an FIR against Asharfi Das Sahu Samaj Inter Mahila Mahavidyalaya at Nirmali and Millat College at Birpur, both in Supaul district, for the same reason.
The +2 schools deprived of affiliation have also been served separate show-cause notices, seeking reply within 15 days on why they shouldn’t be derecognized by the board.
The board will also take action against all officials and employees found guilty of wrongfully recommending or approving the affiliation to these erring institutions. However, special arrangements will be made for students of the derecognized schools so that their studies are not hampered.
