Mechanised boat fishermen conducted a boat rally protest routing over the sea from Thengapattinam to Kanyakumari opposing the Central government's plan to establish a port in Innayam, Kanyakumari district.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
More than 500 boats tied with black flags participated in the rally with protestors raising slogans against the government.
The central government has plans to establish a commercial port worth 28 crores in Innayam region of the Kanyakumari district. Opposing this, the fishermen from coastal villages protested against such establishments in their region, as it would affect their livelihood.
They also conducted hunger strikes at 14 places in the coastal villages' region.
As the boats sailed across seashore villages, people came out to welcome them by ringing church bells as a sign of their approval and support to the cause.
They declared that if the government forcibly tried to establish commercial ports in their region, thousands of lives will be lost in retaliation.
