BRASILIA, Brazil – Lina Lansberg survived longer than Cristiane Justino’s previous four opponents, but just barely.

Just a few seconds after the second round began, Justino (17-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) had caught Lansberg (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) with a right hand that sent her into survival mode. The expected beating came to a close at the 2:29 mark of the frame.

“I knew that she wanted to keep the fight standing, so I took her to the ground and I showed a little bit of ground work,” Justino said.

The 140-pound catchweight bout was the main event of today’s UFC Fight Night 95 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. It aired on FS1 following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

After all the drama leading up her second appearance in the 140-pound division created for her, the most unique thing about Justino’s performance was its length. The Invicta FC featherweight champ caused a frenzy of media attention when she revealed she needed to cut 24 pounds four days before the fight and was taking birth control to help the process.

UFC officials – and the MMA media – closely monitored her progress and questioned why she was even fighting in the octagon at 140 pounds when no such division exists, and her usual featherweight class is not represented in the octagon.

With a highly coveted catchweight fight against ex-bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey looking less and less likely as time goes by, her reasons for enduring additional suffering are hard to justify.

But nevertheless, Justino made the 141 pounds allowed by the promotion, looking shaky and relieved to have accomplished the brutal task. That left just one thing to take care of in Lansberg, a career bantamweight and muay Thai specialist who bulked up for the fight and admitted she would have faced “Cyborg” at 145 pounds.

Even before Justino marched forward and trapped Lansberg against the fence, there were chants from the Brazilian audience of “you’re going to die.” And nothing about Lansberg’s performance suggested she was competitive with Justino, even though she was able to tough out dozens of knees to the midsection, a slam to the mat, and, of course, punches in bunches.

Justino ragdolled her opponent around the octagon, yet seemed conscious of giving fans their money’s worth by taking her time. There was no point she wasn’t in control. A smile creeped across her face at a few points.

When the two met for the second frame, though, Justino got down to business with her powerful right hand, following with a pair of hard kicks to the body. Lansberg was tripped to the mat and covered up for dear life, making a stoppage imminent.

Justino has sworn off 140 pounds in the throes of her weight cut, which she’s documented on two occasions, inviting additional scrutiny. But in the cage after her one-sided beatdown, she indicated she would continue on with the UFC.

“I already have two belts at home,” said Justino, referring to her titles under Invicta and the now-defunct Strikeforce. “I just want to put on superfights for my fans and make them happy.”
