Commuting between Noida and Central Delhi will be easier than never before. The much-delayed slip road from Noida to Barapulla corridor will be opened for the public in the next few days.

This will save commuters from Noida the hassle of a long U-turn at Sarai Kale Khan to reach their destination. The project was delayed due to protests by residents of Siddhartha Extension followed by a legal dispute. Construction work has been completed and the loop is ready to be opened in a few days, said PWD engineer-in-chief Sarvagya Srivastava. The date of opening the corridor is yet to be finalised. The PWD has already opened the loop in the reverse direction, i.e. from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium to the DND flyway.

According to PWD, the slip road connecting the DND flyway with Barapulla elevated corridor will save commuters a drive of nearly 3 km. At present, motorists coming from Noida via DND flyway have to go past Sarai Kale Khan, take a U-turn from under the flyover near Nizamuddin railway station and drive back to the point of entry to Barapullah.

HARROWING TASK

This often becomes a harrowing task for commuters as the stretch remains heavily congested at any point of the day. The situation aggravates during the morning and evening peak hours. An estimated 1.5 lakh commuters use this stretch every day.

However, experts anticipate a similar bottleneck on the Ring Road with the opening of the new loop. Traffic coming from Ashram and DND flyway merges just ahead of the slip road near Gurudwara that can lead to traffic snarls, they said.

BARAPULLAH FLYWAY

Since the area is congested and narrow, there is little scope for widening the road. The existing phase-I of Barapullah elevated corridor connects Sarai Kale Khan and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Phase-II will extend it till INA Market and Phase-III will connect it all the way to Mayur Vihar.

According to officials, the idea is to shrink travel time from East Delhi to the rest of Delhi.

According to officials, the traffic coming from the elevated road will disperse in three directions - right towards Noida, left towards Akshardham and straight towards Mayur Vihar.
