In Short

  • Upgrade to Director means non teaching post.
  • Retirement age changes from 65 to 62.
  • All sports teachers at DU are presently holding teaching posts.

Sports teachers of the Delhi University are seething in anger. And their anger is due to the change in designation from teaching staff to non teaching staff. Their retirement age too will change from 65 years to 62 years.

The guideline in this regard has been issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) which has changed the age criterion for the post of assistant/ associate professors. In a letter, it was said that the post of these teachers has been changed to 'director, physical education' from assistant/associate professors.

It sounds like a promotion but the upgrade is turning out to be a nightmare as they have been shifted to a non-teaching post and thus their retirement age will be changed too. The retirement age for the teaching staff is 65 years while for the non teaching staff is 62 years.

All the sports teachers at the Delhi University (DU) are presently holding teaching posts. But now things seem to be changing, which has caused massive resentment among these teachers.

MORE THAN 50 TEACHERS PROTEST

Not surprisingly , more than 50 teachers unanimously refused to attend the first general body meeting (GBM) of the Sports Council in this academic session on Saturday. The meeting was held to discuss and schedule the tournaments and games for the students in the coming session.

"This is unjustified for all of us who have been part of the University for so long. Some of the teachers have been suddenly told to move to a non-teaching post. We are equally part of the college as like other teachers," said one of the teachers requesting anonymity.

The teachers also said in a bid to professionalise physical education, to attract talent and to recognise the importance of the discipline of physical education, Delhi University through its academic and executive council, took the initiative to grant recognition to directors of physical education as teachers and designated them as lecturers in physical education way back in 1981 which they said was the period of their empowerment which lasted till 2010.

ALL WORK NO PLAY

The sports teachers alleged that from 2010, with the introduction of the semester system, sports began to face a "decline" because of the "limited time available to students for participating in sports, coaching camps and for sports administration to organise inter-college sporting events within the constraints of the new academic calendar with University exams being held twice a year". On the other hand, some alleged that cancellation of the GBM will lead to delay in the tournaments.

"The entire admission season has already got delayed for many other reasons and now this will also hamper the students' training and the tournaments," a senior DU official said.

NO MERCY

Professor CS Dubey, chairman of Delhi University Sports Council, said: "We understand their situation but the decision has not been taken by the Sports Council. The guidelines were set up by the UGC and the University is asking the teachers to follow it. The meeting could not take place on Saturday but we will not delay it further and will go ahead with it in few days."
