HYDERABAD: Chief minister
K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday nearly said that there was no redemption in sight for the
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation from corruption.
Answering a question on steps being taken by the government to rid GHMC of corrupt staff, Chandrasekhar Rao said, "If the government were to begin taking action against corrupt staff, then no one will be left in the GHMC."
In an open admission of the extent of corruption in the GHMC as well as in the
Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the chief minister said the employees in the two civic bodies are not really worried about action being taken against them for any illegal or illicit act on their part even when warned by their commissioners.
"Commissioners tho aate jaate. Hum permanent hai (commissioners come and go, we are permanent here)," is the refrain among the GHMC and HMDA employees," Chandrasekhar Rao said. He was addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after reviewing the situation in the city and the state in the wake of the current spell of heavy rains.
He, however, said that the government was looking at ways to change laws to make it possible to transfer employees from these civic bodies to other positions in the state in an attempt to eliminate them from 'settling down' into comfort zones and indulging in corruption with impunity.
