Mumbai Congress strongly opposes demand to scrap Atrocities Act

As clamour for Maratha reservation and scrapping for the SC/ST (Atrocities) Prevention act is growing, Mumbai Congress has strongly opposed the demand. On the backdrop of the ongoing rallies in Maharashtra by the Maratha community to demand reservation, a meeting of Maratha and Dalit leaders fom Mumbai Regional Congress Committee was held under the leadership of Sanjay Nirupam.

CONSPIRACY TO CREATE RIFT IN SOCIETY?

Although the demand of scrapping the Atrocities Act was opposed, Mumbai congress has supoorted the demand for Maratha reservation. Sources present in the meeting told India Today that the main focus of the meeting was to discuss whether there is a conspiracy to create a rift in the society on the backdrop of Maratha rallies.

"The Prevention of Atrocities Act and Maratha Reservation have been done by the Congress Party for Social Justice. It's the duty of the present government to protect them. If the Atrocities Act is being misused, the misuse should be stopped but if there is a conspiracy to scrap it, Congress party will strongly oppose ", Said Sanjay Nirupam President of Mumbai Congress.

IN SOLIDARITY WITH SILENT MARCH

Nirupam also added that the Congress party is in solidarity with the Silent March in different parts of the state by the Maratha community for their demand of reservations.

The meeting was attended by Sanjay Nirupam, Ex MP Eknath Gaimwad, Legislators Bhai Jagtap, Janardan.Chandurkar, Former.Social Justice Minister Chandrakant Handore and leaders of the OBC and SC /ST Cell.
