Cop attacked over garbage dumping

Angry villagers beat up a policeman and ransacked a police vehicle at Uttar Bairaguri village in Alipurduar when cops went to lift the blockade on Buxa Feeder Road on Saturday. Villagers were protesting against Alipurduar Municipality's decision to allocate an area in the village for garbage dumping.

JALPAIGURI: Angry villagers beat up a policeman and ransacked a police vehicle at Uttar Bairaguri village in Alipurduar when cops went to lift the blockade on Buxa Feeder Road on Saturday. Villagers were protesting against Alipurduar Municipality's decision to allocate an area in the village for garbage dumping.
Tension was brewing in the village close to Majher Dabri tea estate for a couple of days.Villagers had barracked garbage dumpers on September 22 and didn't allow the municipality to dump waste.
A large police contingent had lathicharged the mob that day . As a precaution on Saturday , civic employees who came with the garbage vans brought along a huge police force. In retaliation, villagers put up a blockade on the road bringing traffic to a standstill.
When police went to lift the blockade, the mob dragged out blockade, the mob dragged out Alipurduar SDPO's personal security officer Sanjay Barma and started beating him. Barma had to be admitted to Alipurduar hospital. Locals came out in large numbers armed with sticks and stones and put up a human wall to stop the police from entering the village.
