AHMEDABAD: A Shahpur based autorickshaw driver has complained to police that he was chased and beaten with iron pipes by gau rakshaks, on Saturday, for not paying hafta. Allegedly, the gau rakshaks take regular payments to allow autorickshaws ferry meat of buffalo and blue bull.
The vicim, Sabir Patel, 40, a resident of Shahpur mill compound was treated at VS Hospital for severe injuries on his right leg allegedly caused by the beating.
He was discharged later.
At the hospital, Patel told police that while he was moving towards his native in Nera village in Bechraji taluka, Mehsana, he was chased by one Raju Sathvara, a local gau rakshak. The men caught him at Vithalpur chokdi in Sanand taluka, where they attacked him.
"There were four people who chased me in a white luxury car. They pulled up their car in front of my autorickshaw at Vithlapur chakdi. Suddenly, one of them kicked me from behind and as I fell down, Sathwara started beating me with an iron nod studded with metal shrapnel and bolts," Patel said.
"They told me if I don't pay them hafta, I will meet the fate of Ayyub, who was murdered by gau rakshaks," added Patel.
When asked why gau rakshaks were asking for hafta from him, he said, "I used to ferry meat of buffalo and blue bulls in my auto rickshaw. They used to take hafta of Rs 15,000 for allowing me to ferry the meat."
Head constable Sartanbhai at VS hospital police table confirmed that Patel was beaten by gau rakshaks and a formal complaint has been lodged in the case. The complaint will be sent to Sanand taluka police station.
