Paul Pogba: Watch the best moments of Manchester United midfielder’s best game so far

THAT’S what a world record signing looks like.

Paul Pogba was unleashed against the Premier League champions and played like the Rolls Royce to match his price tag.

There will be sterner tests, particularly where an opponent’s midfield throws more questions at United than Leicester did, and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho refuses to buy into the hype until his record purchase produces that week in, week out, for two halves of football.

But on Saturday night, it is no surprise that United’s best coincided with Pogba’s best.

Many will also add that Wayne Rooney’s absence during United’s best was also no coincidence, with the tempo and forward thinking play of Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford too rampant for their opponents.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic a given up front, this telling line from Mourinho could prove telling: “When our main striker is Zlatan we need fast people to surround him.”

Pogba’s display will get the hype his top billing commands, but with Liverpool, Chelsea, Europa League and a League Cup clash with Manchester City imminent, he’ll get the chance to really prove the hype is worth it.

And Mourinho has challenged him to do so.

“I don’t know (if it was his best PL game), I think he played okay against Southampton, he played okay against Hull City,” Mourinho said.

“When the team didn’t play well he plays not so well, when the team plays better he plays better.

“We all want more from him and from the team. The last thing that the team achieves is consistency because the process starts with playing well in spaces and the last thing you achieve is to play well consistently.

“So he has to be more consistent like the team, but I think him and Ander in midfield, they were good.

“They were a good complement and again, Ander is a kid that brings intensity and I thought also on the defensive point of view it was important to have fast players on the pitch to recover a team that is very direct in the counter-attack with lots of long balls and people arriving from behind.

“So we changed the team to play against Leicester, the specific qualities they have.”

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, former Manchester United fullback Gary Neville said the mediocrity – and savage criticism – of the past week could be the wake-up call to spur on the world’s most expensive player.

“Pogba was instrumental in that first half. We look at the scrutiny on Wayne Rooney, but a lot of people are saying that for £90m on a central midfield player, you have to influence the game. Today he did.

“The first half he was the best player on the pitch. In the first half, he seemed more determined, like Mourinho had told him to sprint back and win the ball. I think he’s had a bit of a wake-up call in the week.

“It was an all-round performance. It is the best I’ve seen him.

“If you think about what you want your midfield player to do for £90m, you want him to pass well, come forward, be a threat in the box, be dynamic, sprint back and be a force defensively.

“All the facets of what would be an all-round midfield player, he’s one of those rare midfield players who can do most things, and today we saw a big influence on the game.”

The Frenchman had a freer reign without Rooney inhibiting his space, and took up more expansive, advanced positions, and most importantly, stamped his influence all over Old Trafford - he ran 10.88 kilometres - against a ragged Leicester team.

The issues United have had integrating him thus far, becoming exposed defensively whenever the supreme talent indulged his talents by pushing further forward, were non-existent against a Foxes side so hapless that Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were withdrawn at the interval.

Leicester’s 4-4-2 played into United, and Pogba’s hands, and they thrived with 67% of the ball in enough space to show the pace, power and pizazz expected for Jose Mourinho’s side at home. He was ably supported by Ander Herrera and put on a masterclass against Claudio Ranieri’s side.

Pogba’s reaction? He was as nonplussed as ever, and said the week’s headlines hadn’t driven him.

“Me, I never look at the newspapers,” he said. “I always say one thing: It’s at the end we will see. So at the end you will see.”

Meanwhile, reports from Tuttosport in Italy reveal that the Frenchman returned to Juventus’ Turin headquarters on Friday to finally go back and clear his locker, which he hastily vacated before signing with the Premier League club before the season.

His departure surprised some of his colleagues, and the report suggests the midfielder returned with Rolex watches as a gesture for all the squad and staff at his former club; both as a goodbye and thank you, but also an apology for his exit.
