The assault on a pregnant Moga nurse by an Akali sarpanch and his son has also heated up the political rivalry in the poll-bound state. While Congress local leader from the area and ticket aspirant Darshan Singh Brar is claiming credit for convincing the nurse to get an FIR registered, local SAD MLA Maheshinder Singh has claimed that the “party will not shield the accused and is standing with the victim.”
Aam Aadmi Party MP Bhagwant Mann reached the residence of the nurse in Kotla Mehar Singh village on Saturday evening and promised help to the family.
He also attacked the ‘Nanhi Chhaan’ campaign of Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Mann said, “The Akali Dal minister runs a campaign called Nanhi Chhaan. She talks of respecting women and saving the girl child. And a sarpanch of this party assaults a woman who is pregnant. Is this the Nanhi Chhaan that Harsimrat Badal talks about? I met Ramandeep and told her that AAP will stand with her at every step. I went there not to take any political mileage but just offer my sympathy for the unfortunate incident. The Akalis have no right to ridicule a woman who is earning her bread, not looting the state like them.”
Local Akali Dal MLA Maheshinder Singh said, “I am supporting the victim and I am there whenever she needs any help. I even told the sarpanch and his son to go and apologise to her and if she does not agree, the law will take its course.
The party is not going to shield them in any way. They have committed the crime and it is punishable and we condemn it.”
The Congress leader and ticket aspirant from Baghapurana Darshan Singh Brar and his son Kamaljit Singh Brar are claiming that family is Congress supporter. They are also claiming that it was only after their intervention that police registered FIR. “It is only after we intervened that justice has been served to the victim. We convinced her to get FIR registered,” said Kamaljit Singh Brar.
