The arrested accused had allegedly kept a watch outside the businessman’s office for days before posing as a taxi driver and a passenger earlier this week and accosting him. The police said Sanghvi hailed a share taxi, which already had a passenger in it. “When the taxi was passing through Carnac Bridge, the passenger asked for the vehicle to be stopped because he wanted to use a public toilet,” said Mohan Dahikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).

As the vehicle came to a halt, the passenger forced Sanghvi and his associates out and grabbed the bags full of gold. “The accused also stole Sanghvi’s gold chain and ordered him to turn and walk away and threatened to kill him if he did not obey,” Dahikar said. Soon after the taxi drove away, Sanghvi alerted the police.

On Saturday, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch arrested the taxi driver Shahnawaz Khan (22), and Jahangir Shaikh (27), who had followed the taxi on a motorcycle. The police also found the taxi in Khan’s home. The police then arrested Praful Gaikwad (36) from Mira Road while he was about to sell a portion of the stolen gold. “Gaikwad was the main conspirator. He had decided to target Sanghvi,” Dahikar said. The police seized gold ornaments worth Rs 45 lakh from Gaikwad.

The Pydhonie police also arrested Ratan Singh (28), who allegedly helped the other three men commit a similar robbery in Vashi earlier this year.
