The Samjawadi Party (SP) Saturday cancelled party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s proposed rally in his parliamentary constituency Azamgarh on October 6. The rally, Mulayam’s first in the run up to the next year’s Assembly polls, was scheduled to be held at ITI ground where BSP chief Mayawati had held a public meeting last month.

Party’s state headquarters in Lucknow conveyed the decision to its Azamgarh unit in the afternoon. While party spokesperson Mohd Shahid refused to give a reason behind cancellation, sources said that the recent feud within top SP brass could have led to the decision.

Party state president Shivpal Singh Yadav had held a meeting in Lucknow earlier this week with district president, MLAs and ministers from Azamgarh division and adjoining areas over preparations of the rally. They all were instructed to ensure maximum gathering at the rally.

According to a leader associated with the preparations of the rally, party had set a target to gather 10 lakh people for the rally. “Distribution of hoardings and banners had started and nearly 35 per cent hoardings had already been erected in the district. The rally was being held to launch party’s election campaign,” the leader said.
