Executive Turntable: New Hires at Universal Music Group, ASCAP, Warner Music Nashville & More

A list of moves and shakes across the music business, including at Universal Music Group, ASCAP and Warner Music Nashville.

— Richard Carrick has been named Chair of Berklee’s Composition Department. Carrick, a 2015-2016 Guggenheim Fellow, has taught composition courses at Columbia and New York University, while also having presented classes and lectures throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. 

— Warner/Chappell Music announced Eric Mackay has been promoted to Vice President, Digital, Europe, Middle East & Africa and Asia-Pacific. He first joined the company in 2015 as head of Digital, Europe. Prior to Warner/Chappell Music, Mackay worked at VEVO, CELAS, White Noise, and Integral Management.

— Universal Music Group has named James Murtagh-Hopkins Senior Director, Communications. Previously, he was Director of Communications at UK Music, an umbrella organization that represents UK’s commercial music industry as a whole. In the past he has held senior roles at Sony Music, EMI Records, and more. 

— The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) announced that Max Martin has renewed his agreement with the organization. The agreement allows for representation of public performances of his expansive and chart-topping songwriting catalog. He has had 22 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, and has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award nine times.

— Warner Music Nashville has unveiled it’s new artist marketing department, complete with a newly created Radio and Streaming team. Kristen Williams has been promoted to Senior Vice President of the team. Additionally, Vice President of Brand Management Lisa Ray will oversee an expanded department that will encompass Digital. 

— Pat Handlin has been appointed Senior A&R Manager of Syco Music UK. He joins Syco from Sony Music Australia where he was director of A&R. 

— IFPI, representing the international recording industry, announced its global director of communications, Adrian Strain, will step down at the end of this year. He is leaving to start a consultancy practice that will work both in and outside the music industry. 

— David Kokakis has been promoted to Executive Vice President/Head of Business and Legal Affairs, Business Development and Digital for Universal Music Publishing Group. He was previously Senior Vice President. 

— Music licensing company PPL has appointed Lynn McDowell to the newly created role of Head of Communications. She will help the company prepare for its joint venture on public performance licensing with PRS in 2017. 

— ASCAP has revealed the assembly of its new Digital Team. It will be made up of the Digital Product and User Experience Group — led by Dena Fletcher, who has been named Vice President, Digital Product and User Experience — and the newly created Data Strategy and Business Intelligence Group — led David Frigeri, who has been named Vice President, Data Strategy and Business Intelligence. 

— Ira Rubenstein will take on the new position of Chief Digital and Marketing Officer at PBS. Rubenstein joined PBS in 2014 as its general manager of digital. 

— Pearl Records has hired Lesly Simon as its General Manager. Previously, Simon handled Vice President/Promotion responsibilities for Sony Music Nashville’s Arista Nashville.
