Russia, US, France Ready to Host Peace Talks Between Armenia, Azerbaijan
YEREVAN (Sputnik) Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian has held a meeting with Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and discussed the prospects of settling the war in the crisis-ridden country, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

"During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on international efforts taken to settle the Syrian crisis," the ministerial statement reads.

Nalbandian expressed hope that the recently reached US-Russia agreement on Syria would be implemented, and that "it would pave the way to comprehensive talks on the settlement of the crisis."

According to the Armenian Ministry of Diaspora, the Armenian community in Syria amounted to about 110,000 people before the start of the civil war in 2011, and was considered to be one of the largest expat communities among others in Syria. Most of them were generations of the Armenians, who had survived the massacres and deportations of the Ottoman Turkey in the beginning of the 20th century. Over 60,000 Armenians were living in Aleppo. About 90,000 Armenians have left Syria since the start of the civil conflict.
