In a crackdown on smuggling of illicit brew into the State from Karnataka, the police here seized 267.84 litres of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) from a car here late on Thursday.
On a tip-off, a police team intercepted a car and seized the brew, including 1,488 tetrapacks with a capacity of 180 ml each and priced in the range of Rs.60 to 70 per pack, a product that is banned in the State, Varun. G. Krishnan, sub-inspector attached to the Town police station, who headed the raiding party, said.
The occupants of the car, who tried to escape the police dragnet, drove the vehicle into a bylane and escaped under the cover of darkness by abandoning the vehicle near the KSRTC bus depot here, the police official said.
The liquor filled in easy-to-carry tetrapacks could have been smuggled probably targeting vulnerable teenagers and domestic get-togethers, he said.
The police, who have registered a case in connection with the incident, are said to have received tangible clues about the smugglers.
