Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy showered praised on compatriot Conor Hourihane after the Corkman's call-up to Martin O'Neill's extended panel for the looming World Cup qualifiers.

Barnsley midfielder Hourihane has been rewarded for his terrific form this season with inclusion in the 33-man squad for the Group D clashes against Georgia in Dublin on 6 October and the trip to Moldova three days later.

He was named the Championship player of the month for August and has been central to his side's strong start to the campaign.

That's no surprise to Duffy, who lines up against the 25-year-old Corkman in Brighton and Hove Albion's home clash with the Tykes this afternoon.

“He’s [Conor Hourihane] a great player that’s taken this league by storm," Duffy told Brighton's official website

"I came through with their goalkeeper as well [Adam Davies at Everton]; they’ve got a good team there.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but if we play to our potential, we’ll be strong enough.

“I know a few of the lads there, they’ve surprised everyone. It’s going to be a tough game, we know what we’re up against, but I’m looking forward to it."

I had more chances than most of our strikers last year

Duffy has settled in well at Brighton since making the switch from Blackburn Rovers last month.

After missing Ireland's opening Group D draw with Serbia due to suspension, Murphy has returned to O'Neill's panel.

He's now targeting good form and more goals from centre-half to catch the manager's eye.

“I had more chances than most of our strikers last year," he said. "I had another chance on Saturday, which I was disappointed not to take, but I think they will come.

“I always try and score as many goals as I can. So I want to try and beat last year’s target, as I should have got double figures last season, if I’m being harsh on myself.

“If I keep getting into the right areas, then I will have one season where I get more goals than what people expect, and it’s a big thing that I’m trying to improve in my game.”
