With their win over the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Washington Nationals' loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs have clinched home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs.

Sweet home Chicago

The Cubs are 56-23 at Wrigley Field this season, the best home record in MLB. Their .709 winning percentage at home is tied for their second-best at home since moving to Wrigley Field in 1916.

In their home games, the Cubs have outscored their opponents by 146 runs, an average of 1.85 per game.

The Cubs have been difficult to hold off late in games at Wrigley. Of the 24 games at home in which they trailed after seven innings, they have come back to win six times.

They have the best winning percentage in MLB in those games (.250).

They beat good teams at home

Perhaps the biggest advantage for the Cubs in clinching home-field advantage is how well they have done against potential playoff opponents.

Against teams currently with winning records in the National League, the Cubs are 23-9 at Wrigley Field (.719).

A little home cooking

The Cubs having home-field advantage could be big for a few of their key contributors.

Addison Russell has a .271 batting average and .831 OPS at home compared to .215 and .667 on the road.

The Cubs also have three different starting pitchers with a home ERA below 2.00 this season. Kyle Hendricks and Jon Lester, the two most likely candidates to start the first two games of the playoffs for the Cubs, are at 1.32 and 1.86, respectively.

Wrigley has been an advantage for the entire Cubs' starting rotation, though. The highest ERA by a Cubs starter there this season is 2.62 by Jake Arrieta, who threw seven scoreless innings Friday.
