GURGAON: Gurgaon police has failed to make any headway in the murder of gangster Mahesh alias Attack, 48 hours after he was gunned down by unknown assailants. They are still probing the theory that the murder was an outcome of gang rivalry, but so far they have failed to identify the assailants or the involvement of any particular gang.
The recovery of the vehicle used by the assailants, which cops had touted as a major lead, has turned out to be a dead end.
Forensic experts had collected crime scene evidence from the XUV500 and Attack’s Scorpio, but nothing has come of it. The vehicle was traced to one Om Prakash Sharma, who had given it to an used car dealer to sell. On August 18, the assailants had borrowed the car on the pretext of taking a trial ride, but ran away with it.
Police sources said the killers may have been hired shooters, which is why they had zeroed down on some known professional sharpshooters. They said police was probing the possible involvement of rival gangs led by gangsters Kaushal and Sandeep Gadoli, and that the murder was the result of “business” rivalry.
It may be recalled that on Wednesday evening, Attack had invited his two cousins and a friend to his office for an evening drink. At around 10pm, when his cousins left, he came and sat in his Scorpio with the friend. A Mahindra XUV500 approached from behind just as the friend had left his car to relieve himself. As Attack drove to one side to let the XUV500 pass, three gunmen emerged from it to fire indiscriminately on him. He was hit by eight bullets and died on the spot, said police.
“We’re focused on cracking the case, but it is too soon to confirm any theory behind the murder,” said Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar.
