Labasa College Year 13  student Shayal Shivani scooped the Dux Award in the Arts division and wants to be a lawyer because of the inspiration of Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“My idol is Mr Sayed-Khaiyum because he is well articulated and he knows what and when to say something,” Ms Shivani said.

“I want to become an intelligent and smart person like Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

“Therefore, I have been studying diligently to pursue my law degree.”

Ms Shivani walked away with the top award during the annual awards ceremony on Thursday.

The only daughter of Mukesh Chand and Sunil Lata of Valebasoga, Labasa, Ms Shivani scored 372 out of 400 marks.

“I love studying and I am proud to achieve the Arts Dux award which I have been aiming since the beginning of this year.”

Ms Shivani attributed her success to giving up on social media and organising her study timetable well.

Her aggregate scores are English 77, Mathematics 94, Economics 98, History 98 and Geography 99 at the school’s annual exams.

The chief guest at the ceremony was the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy.

Science Dux Aspires To Be A Doctor

Labasa College Science Dux Prashneet Chand from Naleba wants to become a doctor.

The only boy in his family, Prashneet chose to pursue a career in the medical field because he has a desire to help the needy and provide better health care.

Speaking after the school annual awards ceremony on Thursday, Prashneet said he was sparked to perform by his family who were supportive of his efforts.

“My family has been very supportive and encouraging me to pursue my dream to become a doctor,” Prashneet said.

“Over the years I have been hearing news about shortage of doctors in the country.

“This had manoeuvred me to strive for excellence in my last year of secondary school education and be a help to my nation.

“From the very first day of school, I have been studying five hours daily and I still continue to do so.”

The 18-year-old scored 378 out of 400 for the school annual exams; with the following grades English 80, Mathematics 99, Biology 99, Chemistry 100, and Physics 99.
