THANE: The crime branch unit-1 arrested three individuals, Abhishek Pawar, Jyotesh Singh and Gulfan from Vartak Nagar area for cheating a 46-year-old man. The trio had conned Shailesh Satam, a Ghatkopar resident, by taking Rs 57,000 apparently to renew his lapsed insurance policy. The trio called up Satam one day and convinced him to renew his lapsed life insurance policy.
“One of the accused called Satam on his mobile phone and gave him a description of the life insurance policy which he had taken few years ago. But as Satam had not paid the premiums the policy had lapsed. He was then told that, they would renew the policy if he agrees to pay a few premiums after which he would receive the entire amount after the policy matures. Satam had thought that the call was genuine and from the company and his policy will actually be renewed, so he willingly transferred the amount to the account number provided by the accused.
After two months, when the policy was not renewed he realised that he has been cheated as the company claimed that they had not made any phone calls nor renewed his policy,” said Nitin Thakre, senior inspector crime branch unit-1.
The police claimed that Satam is not the sole victim of this cheating racket, but many from Mumbai, Thane, Nasik and various other cities in Maharashtra have been cheated by this gang in the past one year. After getting several similar complaints, the cops started following the case and made a sketch based on a victim’s descriptions. The cops laid a trap in Vartak Nagar after they got a tip that the trio would visit the spot and were nabbed.
“The trio will be in the police custody till Monday and we are trying to get more information as to how many people were cheated and how much money was extorted,” added Thakre.
