MARGAO: As a part of its nine-day intensive cleanliness drive across all its railway stations, depots and trains, titled ‘Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat – Swachhata Saptah’, (organized under the directives of the railway board as a part of the nationwide swachhta abhiyan) which concludes on Sunday, September 25, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) succeeded in clearing a total of 20 metric tonnes of garbage from its Karwar region, besides developing awareness among the rail users.

KRCL regional railway manager (RRM), Karwar, Mohammad Aasim Sulaiman informed the media, “The KRCL had increased the number of dustbins at the railway stations with an emphasis given to segregation of dry and wet waste. Two organic waste converters (or compost plants) have also been installed at Margao and Karwar so as to manufacture manure that is later utilized for the development of the 50,000 plants in the KRCL gardens.
“Further, within the next two days, a dustbin will be provided in every train toilet to curb the toilets from being choked up with the waste being dumped into them. Seminars, prabhat pheris (processions), street plays (nukkad nataks) or skits and drawing contests for students have been organized to create awareness among the public about garbage disposal. The KRCL has also tied up with the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) for proper and effective disposal of its garbage with the requisite fees being paid to the municipality.”
Also present were assistant commercial manager Shridhar Bhat and deputy general manager (DGM), public relations, B G Ghatge.
