Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi ended the first phase of his “Deoria to Delhi Kisan Yatra” in Lucknow Friday with a promise to waive-off the loans of farmers “within 10 days of forming a government in Uttar Pradesh”.  Flanked by party’s Chief Ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit and PCC chief Raj Babbar, Rahul held a road show across the state capital. While taking potshots at the RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “creating a divide among people”, the Congress leader tried to send out a message of equality of religions as he visited Ravidas Temple, Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, St Joseph’s Cathedral and a Gurdwara.

“We want to ensure that there is no violence against anyone and people do not feel afraid. But Modi ji wants to make one Indian fight with another Indian,” he said.

Continuing with his attack on PM for making “false promises”, Rahul asked, “Narendra Modi ne dhai saal mein kamjor, yuva, kisan aur majdoor ke liye kya kiya (In the past two-and-a-half years, what has Modi for the weaker section, youth, farmers or labourers)?”

“10 din ke andar karja maaf karke dikha denge, jab humari sarkar ayegi. (We will waive off the loans within 10 days of forming the government. Raj Babbar and Sheila Dikshit and I promise you that,” he said.

Later in the day, ending his road show in the Old City, Rahul told a gathering that economists have told him that the schemes like MGNREGA and loan waiver had helped the overall economy of the country and not just the farmers.

Festive offer

The Congress leader reiterated that his suggestion of bringing a ‘kisan budget’ will also benefit the central government. “Main kisan budget ke liye Arun Jaitley ji ko rajnaitik sujhav de raha hun. Us sey unka bhi fayeda hoga (It is a political advice for Arun Jaitley for his own good),” Rahul said adding that such a budget would help farmers knows how much government has set aside for flood, drought, or to assist him with grains, vegetables.

He said BJP wishes to “finish off” the Railway budget so that “you do not get to know about how many new railway stations or railway lines you would get or how much would be spent on maintenance.
