Treggings are the new leggings. The trouser-leggings hybrids seen at H&M, The Row, Zara and ASOS are effortless to don than straight-up leggings, as they are typically made of a thicker material and feature more of a pants-like cut (i.e. they’re not skin tight). That’s what differentiates it from leggings. Amalgamating comfort with style, they can take you from your work place to the nearest watering hole with a few minor style tweaks here and there. Read what some style arbiters have to say...

How to rock it

Designer Monica Shah of label Jade by Monica and Karishma says, “Treggings are one of the most versatile and comfortable pieces of clothing a girl could have in her wardrobe. Invest in a deep-hued, high-waist treggings that can be worn during the day at work with a pastel coloured kurta, which is both formal and elegant. For brunch you can wear it with a fun, printed top or shirt. And you can wear these oh-so-comfy pair of treggings for a fun night out by pairing it with a stylish crop top and statement accessories.”

Latest trend alert

Treggings have been the latest trend alert. They work very well for office wear or post office night out. Stylist Leepakshi Ellawadi, who recently got herself a pair from All Saints recalls, “Balmain in 2009 introduced them in twill-based lycra format. Otherwise, leggings are not taken very well as work wear. The treggings make your legs look shapely and work well with both shorter and longer tops, layered with a longer jacket. Just change your top and footwear and you’re ready to go out post work. It’s a nice trend because it marries comfort with correct pricing.”

Leepakshi observes that every B-Town star post work has sported them from Katrina Kaif to Deepika Padukone for casual events and night out...it’s catching up.

Go for smart layering

Stylist Divyak Dsouza observes that words like ‘treggings’ are mere fancy names to refresh the same old offerings. “Two key phrases would be: long length and smart layering. Avoid crop top or anything short. No one likes to see the camel toe situation. To work, team it with a tailored kurta shirt which is upscale-yet-ethnic. For a night out, layer it with a shift dress and complete your look with a pair of pointy stilettos. All in all it’s a great closet essential and everyone has to invest in it,” says Divyak.

Stylist Rick Roy says, “Polish it up with a long jacket, say a long trench coat and perhaps wear a shiny separate inside for an evening look. A waistcoat can be a great layering option. A bomber works
well too.”

Great substitute for trousers

Designer Naveen Naaz Shaikh of label Aaylixir says, “Treggings are a very good substitute for your regular trousers. They also have the advantage of being an extremely comfortable alternate for trousers with great stretchability. As they are a blend of leggings and trousers, women can use them as a day option and carry it over for an evening also. Indian women can wear them under a crisp boxy shirt, regular tunic or a well fitted T-shirt also for a day look. For an evening look, throw on a cape or a sleek jacket with boots or pumps. Wear a crop top for a more figure flattering look. They can be a good substitute for your regular work trousers and one can belt them up with a tuck in shirt. As they are available in many colour options also they can be coordinated likewise. Some of them even come with a body shaper attached at the waist.”

Designer Chirag Nainani suggests it’s a great pairing option for Indian women looking at exploring Indo-Western fusion looks. “For women itching to making a switch from saris to kurta shirts ensembles, treggings will be a great styling option. Keep the shoes comfortable and accessories minimal.”

Style it right

Anjali Patel Mehta of label Verandah says, “For a night out, team it with a black t-shirt tucked in, if it’s a pair of high waist treggings. Complete your look with a pair of boots or gladiators with heels or block heels. Accessorise it well. Alternatively, opt for a white poplin shirt tied up if you want to keep it monochrome. In case you’re travelling, you can wear it with a faux fur bolero, a leather jackets and flat shoes. For a day look, wear it with casual kicks, a white t-shirt knotted up in the front.”

Suits every style

Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “The best thing about tregging is they are thicker and have pockets at the back. The skinny silhouette is a fav for everyone. In terms of footwear, you may opt for sneakers or heels — sky is the limit. Treggings can look really formal and it shouldn’t look like you are just done with your workout.”
