BENGALURU: A day after 40-year-old Zeenatun issa Pasha died in a stampede at AKP Convention hall, where tokens for free rations for Ramzan 2017 were being distributed, police said they were not pursuing any case against Syed Asif, the philanthropist who organized the event.
A resident of Modi Road, DJ Halli, Zeenat was caught in a 3,000-strong crowd, comprising mostly women, where she collapsed, said eyewitnesses.
Zeenat was rushed to Bowring Hospital, where she breathed her last.
"Investigation revealed that Zeenat died of cardiac arrest, and an autopsy confirmed the same. We will not initiate action against the organizer, Syed Asif, since he has not committed any offence or had any bad intentions," said Shivajinagar police. They added that Zeenat had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.
A Tasker Town resident, Asif told TOI the had informed police about the distribution, and the stampede occurred despite police presence, since the crowd went out of control. Aggrieved over the death of Zeenat on Wednesday, he said, "I have given Rs 50,000 to the bereaved family. I have been distributing free ration to poor people, especially widows and the physically challenged for 36 years. I was there when the tragic incident occurred."
Zeenat is survived by her husband, Anwar Pasha, who works as a helper in a gas welding shop, and three children.
