More than 40 residents of Jeeva Nagar, Kendala, who are among 68 families facing eviction from their homes, thronged the Coonoor Revenue Divisional Officer’s office on Thursday. The residents, who sat just outside the RDO’s office along with their children, demanded that they be given alternative land to move to, and also time to shift their belongings.
The residents along with members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi went to the office of S. Geethapriya. After sharing their grievances, the residents urged the RDO to find them an alternative piece of land where they can move to. She, in turn, informed them that a piece of land, surveyed and earmarked so that they may move temporarily, will be found. She promised that she would recommend that they received homes built by the slum clearance board as and when they become available.
She also extended the deadline by two days till Sunday after discussing their demands with the police department.
K. Sakadavel, the Nilgiris district secretary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, questioned how the police and the Revenue Department can evict residents from their homes when the case is up for hearing in the Supreme Court.
