A day after Karthik (23) died in custody at the Kannagi Nagar Police Station in Chennai, the mother of the other suspect, detained along with him, has approached the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the police to produce her son.

The habeas corpus petition filed by Kavitha, mother of Arunachallam (19), is likely to come up for hearing before the Division Bench of Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan on Friday.

According to the petitioner, the police came to her house on September 19 and took her son, a daily wage labourer, to the station without stating any reason.

Permission refused

She immediately went to the station, but was not allowed to meet her son. The police did not allow her to meet her son the next day too.

Her request to produce her son before the jurisdictional magistrate was also refused by the officials, she claimed.

Following Karthi’s death on Wednesday, Kavitha said she approached the court.
