2 roads off-limits to cars by March
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq yesterday said two roads in the capital's Banani and Mirpur would be declared car-free ones by March next.
He was addressing a programme organised by Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) in the capital's Manik Mia Avenue marking “World Car-free Day”.
“We will start the practice on a small road near Banani Market…only people will be allowed to walk on the road on that day, no cars,” said Annisul.
He said the system would gradually be extended to Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Gulshan areas.
The mayor reiterated that the government would introduce 3,000 new buses. Mentioning that driving on wrong lanes will no longer be tolerated, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said a new law would be introduced with a provision of harsher punishment for violators of traffic rules. The law will control the use of private cars through allowing only one car per family, he said.
