Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar today demanded 50 per cent power subsidy for the Golden Temple.

The Golden Temple and Durgiana Mandir are supplied free power up to 2,000 units, but for usage beyond the limit, the tariff is Rs 3.22 per unit.

An estimated 7 lakh units of power per month are consumed in the Golden Temple complex. During the summer, the consumption rises to 9 lakh units per month. The average power bill per month is nearly Rs 1 crore. The complex is illuminated on Gurpurb, Diwali and other occasions. A 66-kV substation is being set up in the complex with the assistance of the PSPCL.

“We again appealed to the CM today to consider our proposal of waiving at least half of the power bill,” said SGPC spokesperson and additional secretary Diljit Singh Bedi.
