Lucknow: Expelled employees of a private company attacked their manager and his driver with iron rods and later opened fire on them in broad daylight in the heart of the city on Thursday.
The office is located a stone's throw away from the official residence of the SSP on Sapru Marg.
According to the police, Nirmal Kumar, a resident of Vishal Khand, Gomtinagar, is a manager at a mobile tower company.
His office is in Jeet Palace complex on Sapru Marg.
Around 10.30am on Thursday, Nirmal reached his office. His driver Raj Kishore Yadav had just opened the car's door for Kumar when a group of six youths pounced at him. They dragged Kumar out of the car and started to hit him with iron rods. Kumar was critically injured on his head and at other places and fell unconscious. His driver was also thrashed when he tried to intervene and save Kumar.
Seeing the assailants hit the victims brutally, security guard at a bank, Gulab Singh, stepped up to save them. He too was thrashed by the miscreants.
A large number of commuters on the busy stretch stopped at the scene where Kumar and Yadav were being chased by the assailants. Some youths among the commuters tried to challenge the miscreants while some informed the police.
Seeing the public intervention, the attackers fled, hurling the choicest of abuses at the victims and threatening them. The police arrived minutes later.

Senior sub-inspector at Leela police outpost Manoj Bhadauria rushed the victims to a hospital. Kumar was later shifted to a private hospital, where his condition is critical.
Yadav and Singh are out of danger. "We have received the complaint and will investigate," Bhaduria said.
