As a drummer, he is Aditya Ashok playing for independent bands and New Zealand-based producer, Mikey McClearys project The Bartender. As a music producer and DJ, he works under the alias, OX7GEN and performs at popular music festivals. And when not juggling between the two, he is busy recreating his music in a live setup for his live project that comprises five instrumentalists and two singers.
As a kid, he was once listening to a Yanni album when a melancholic song made him cry for no real reason.
Add to this, he got into a habit of learning instruments because of his brother who would play the guitar and occasionally, harmonica and saxophone. And so, I learnt conga at seven, guitar at 15 and drums on my own with some assistance from Gino Banks, says Aditya. Inspired early on by works of artistes like Tiesto, ATB and Schiller besides electronic music styles such as drum and bass artistes like as London Elektricity & Netsky, he then knew the impact of music on his emotional state. In a more lasting sense, the sounds of bands such as Pink Floyd, Tycho and Air have always influenced my sound. Ive been working with music producer Mikey for the last five years and his work ethic is inspiring, he adds. With an aim to create a sense of space and depth with help from sample sounds and field recordings for his instrumental music, his parents love for Bollywood music had him hooked to the tunes arrangements and its lyrics. The 26-year-old recounts his performance at Troubadour in Los Angeles with his band, Skyharbor, as a highlight in his career. I had the opportunity of performing alongside Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Radiohead and Coldplay and it was simply electrifying. There was this other time when we went to Chicago and were welcomed by throngs of fans; the chemistry on stage was electric.
When not creating melodies, he loves being a chef, travelling and losing himself over a game of chess. He aspires collaborating with Zero 7, Kevin Parker and Bonobo and headline an arena show at Madisson Square Garden.
