Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves are in "advanced discussions" on a buyout of his $8 million salary for this coming season, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. As of early this month, the Timberwolves did not know whether the 40-year-old planned to play in the NBA again. This would indicate that he does not.

It is unclear whether Garnett would consider playing for another team, but when he arrived in Minnesota in a trade from the Brooklyn Nets at the 2015 trade deadline, he had every intention for it to be his last stop in the league. Garnett has talked about owning the Wolves one day, and last season he transitioned to a much smaller role on the court, focusing much of his energy on tutoring the team's young players.

If this is the end of Garnett's 21-year career, it's a bit anticlimactic. He deserved a farewell tour every bit as much as Kobe Bryant did, but that's not his style. He surely will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
