PATNA: Villagers foiled an attempt to kidnap a 9-year-old girl near Plasi village under the Abadpur police station area in Katihar district on Thursday.
Police said the villagers intercepted an SUV near West Bengal border and rescued the girl from the vehicle. They also nabbed the driver and handed him over to police.
Abadpur police station SHO Chittaranjan Yadav said the incident took place when Sabnoora Parveen was returning home from school.
She was dragged inside the vehicle by the driver who then sped away. The driver was identified as Viplav Das (41).
The villagers reacted on hearing the screams of two other children accompanying Parveen, the SHO said and added the girl's father had lodged an FIR in this connection. "We are trying to find out the motive behind the kidnapping bid," said the SHO.
According to another report from Katihar, unidentified thieves in the wee hours of Thursday stole Rs 5.47 lakh from the house of one Kiran Patel in Bhanga village under the Falka police station area.
According to Pothia outpost in-charge Anupam Kumar, Patel is the mukhiya of Bhanga panchayat. She and husband Rajendra Patel were sleeping in another room when the theft took place.
Three get life term: The court of additional district and sessions judge (ADJ) Krishna Murari Sharan on Wednesday awarded life term to three persons after finding them guilty of killing a married woman for want of dowry.

According to prosecution, the victim, Amrita alias Guddi, daughter of Shivji Sah of Vidyadhar locality in Khagaria town was married to one Vijai Sah, son of Dayali Sah of Tehai village under Bhagwanpur police outpost police station in Begusarai district on July 11, 2013. She was killed by her in-laws on March 24, 2014 after her family members failed to fulfil the demand of Rs 2 lakh dowry payment.
Five persons were made named accused in the case by Amrit Kumar, brother of the deceased. Of them, two were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The remaining three - Vijai Sah, Murli Sah and Chhatish Mahto - were held guilty and awarded life imprisonment. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them failing which they will have to spend an additional one year in jail. tnn
