The Army is investigating how thousands of pages of Fort Carson personnel documents wound up in an El Paso County field earlier this month.

The Mountain Post said on Thursday that the documents were discovered Sept. 14 in Fountain and contained personally identifiable information and personal health information.

“All known records involved in this incident have been recovered and secured by military police investigators and the investigation remains ongoing,” Fort Carson said in a statement. “Fort Carson and the 4th Infantry Division take this loss very seriously.”

Army authorities have identified a suspect, who works for the U.S. Department of Defense, and believe the incident is isolated.

The Mountain Post says officials are working to contact those affected.

“The records pertain to legal actions in the 4th Infantry Division’s 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team between the years of 2008 and 2014 and were scheduled for destruction,” Fort Carson said. “We fully understand our responsibilities in safeguarding personal information and will make all efforts to assist impacted individuals.”

Anyone who feels they are linked to the documents are asked to contact the Commanding General’s Hotline through the web or by phone at 719-526-2677.
