SAN SEBASTIAN — Santiago Segura, a driving force of Spanish comedy, is teaming via Bowfinger Int. Pictures with Argentine TV network Telefe and Está Por Venir on “Casi leyendas” (“Almost Legends”), a comedy directed by Gabriel Nesci.

Disney’s Buena Vista Intl. has taken all Latin American rights –including Argentina— to the second feature from Argentina’s Nesci, whose “Vinyl Days” established him as a talent to track. Guido Rud’s FilmSharks has come on board to handle international sales.

“Legends” also stars Segura, the director, screenwriter, producer and and lead of Spain’s biggest-ever comedy movie franchise “Torrente” whose five movies have grossed €81.4 million ($90.0 million) in Spain. Segura heads up Bowfinger with Maria Luisa Gutierrez.

Diego Peretti, a box office star in Argentina, Diego Torres (“Papers in the Wind”), and Claudia Fontán (“Just Like Me.”) head up a strong Argentine cast.

In “Legends,” three members of a band stage a reunion, thanks to Axel (Segura), a solitary man suffering from Asperger syndrome, who decides to fake a comeback contest for acts from the ‘70s and ‘80s.

“‘Legends’ is a rather unique comedy about three guys reuniting in a rock band on the verge of success twenty years ago. Now they’re on a mission: To play again and overcome their neuroses,” said Axel Kuschevatzky, head of film development and production at Telefe. Kuschevatzky will produce alongside Gutiérrez and Mili Roque Pitt.

“We think ‘Legends’ is an smart comedy with a strong crossover appeal, directed by one of the new prominent comedy directors in Latin America, with a script who has plenty of layers of appeal for wide  audiences,”said Rud, predicting the movie would sell in 45-plus markets.

“Legends” enters production on Sept. 12. in Buenos Aires.
