Thieves used a digger to ram raid and remove a cash machine from a supermarket wall stealing "tens of thousands of pounds", said police.
The ATM at the Co-operative store on Northway Lane in Tewkesbury was targeted at about 03:45 BST and then placed into a 4x4 vehicle.
Police said the offenders, wearing balaclavas, were then seen driving off towards the Grange area.
They said the shop was "substantially damaged" and remains closed.
