After Indian art, Indian design practices too seem to be making inroads into the international scene. At the ongoing London Design Biennale, a gigantic installation measuring 800 sqft “Chakraview” is on view. The work which celebrates the concept of time has been designed by Sumant Jayakrishnan in collaboration with Delhi-based artists Avinash Kumar, Hanif Kureshi and Rutva Trivedi.
The work has been curated by Rajshree Pathy, founder of India Design Forum (IDF) which hosts design fairs back home.
The viewers walk into the installation taking in different sights and sounds it has to offer. While Jamdani and Ikat silks hang from the ceiling, hand-painted signs on circular shapes and a shiny floor with chakras on it are major elements of the installation.
Avinash Kumar of BLOT!, Delhi-based audio-visual creative agency has made a 10 minute film on the history and evolution of Indian design, which is also on display. Now at another design event again in London which is the 10th edition of London Design Fair, Indelust, an ethically sourced fashion and home decor store in Bengaluru is supporting ‘This Is India’. India has been selected to be their first annual guest country pavilion..
The pavilion includes 10 emerging and established India-centric designers and brands across product, textile and furniture like Claymen by Aman Khanna, Rubberbrand, Cobalt Design etc.
The fair has also invited Spandana Gopal of Tiipoi to co-curate This is India, alongside Jimmy MacDonald founder & director of the London Design Fair, with an exhibition design by Kangan Arora.
The latter has done an installation comprising 500 terracotta pots, hand-painted and stacked as circling colonnades, stepped towers and shaded screens.
