Excerpts:

Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste?

Yes, I personally only create designs that I think I can carry off. So, it is my personality that I am portraying through my saris.

What do you enjoy the most about designing?

I love the creating part where I get to play with colours on my own canvas. I am like an artist and the sari is my canvas and my masterpiece.

Most of your designs are geometric in style. How are they different from one another?

Not all saris have geometric print. There are different patterns too. I do not repeat the designs, making each piece a one-of-a kind design. Even if I am using geometric prints, I make sure to use each pattern in a unique manner. My collection has a wide range of geometric prints simply because I believe that they look smart and anybody can carry it off.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I started designing about 33 years ago. Back then it was just a hobby and I had no degree is designing. When I first started it was more like a trial and error. As time passed I got more experience and confidence, which led to the genesis of my very own brand ‘Mayuri’. My inspiration came from my college days where my friends and classmates would complement me on my fashion sense and encourage me to plunge into this field.
