Onathinoru veedu' builds first home

The NSS unit of Nirmalagiri College, Kuthuparamba, built the house for a student of the same college under the project

KANNUR: Onathinoru Veedu, a unique project of Kannur University NSS to construct houses for the homeless, will begin on September 22 when vice-chancellor Dr M.K. Abdul Khader hands over the keys to its first beneficiary at Ayithara near Kuthuparamba.

The NSS unit of Nirmalagiri College, Kuthuparamba, built the house for a student of the same college under the project inspired by individual efforts of various NSS units building houses for poor students and others.

Some 8,000 volunteers from 80 NSS units are joining hands by contributing money. Out of them, two units (the Nirmalagiri and DIA College, Paral) have been selected to undertake the project this year. All NSS units will collect and give Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 each for the two selected units and rest of the amount they should pool themselves or raise through donations.
“The government and NGOs build houses for the needy. However, here each NSS volunteer collect money from his neighbourhood for a cause. We are making someone’s life meaningful during this Onam,” said Dr Khader. “It will expand further from next academic year.”
