Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), with help from the state government, is all set to execute Smart City Solutions to make the city not only smart but also safe and clean. With the state’s directorate of information technology (DIT) as nodal agency, the works will be launched as soon as next month.
The civic body had first proposed works worth Rs223.29 crore but later increased the number of works on the advice of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who suggested a few more projects.
The CM had also appointed DIT as the nodal agency for the project, to ensure speedy and proper execution of works.
The DIT had set a deadline of just one year for completion of works worth Rs520 crore. DIT had also issued letter of intent to L&T Company’s unit to take up the project. The company will also operate and maintain the solutions for five years from the date of commissioning.
These works will be executed as part of ‘Pan City Development’ component under Smart City Plan; which is completely independent of the ‘Area Based Development’ component.
The works worth Rs520 crore will be executed in all parts of the city. DIT will first develop the West High Court Road stretch of 5.8km between Japanese Garden Square and Khamla Square via Times Square and Aath Rasta Square as a ‘Smart Strip’. This street section will have smart kiosks, LED street lights, Wi-Fi hotspots, CCTVs, bus stops, cement roads and other smart infrastructure.

Other works to be undertaken across the city include installation of 3,800 CCTVs at over 700 locations; 136 Wi-Fi Hotspots; 200 smart kiosks and 1,200km optical fibre network and backbone.
NMC will pay Rs120 crore from the Smart City Plan to DIT as its share of the Rs520 crore project. Some funds will come from the home department while the remaining will be raised by DIT, which has already got approval of Rs150 crore capital loan from CISCO.
After completion of the project, NMC will execute works worth around Rs103.29 crore to make the city clean. Garbage transport, right from collection at households to transfer stations to dumping yards, will be monitored using modern technology.
